The Middle Rio Grande Sierra Club lost a valuable member over the weekend; their leader. Mary Katherine Wiper was struck by lighting, Sunday while hiking in Colorado. People who worked with Wiper say she was dedicated to her work.
It is with sadness that KUNM acknowledges the passing of Mary Wiper. Mary Wiper headed the Sierra Club of New Mexico and KUNM had numerous opportunities to speak with her in covering stories around the state. Mary Wiper’s memorial was held at La Posada de Albuquerque on August 3rd, 2004. Some of her friends and colleagues shared their memories of Mary with KUNM. You heard Leann Leith, Program Advocate for the New Mexico Public Interest Research Group, Michael Mudd, Co-Chair of the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club, Steven Capra, Executive Director of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance and Jennifer de Garmo, Co-Chair of the Central of the Sierra Club.
