As Congress gets ready to take a break from the health care debate, twelve U.S. medical students studying under scholarships in Cuba are traveling around the Southwest for two weeks, meeting with doctors, nurses, and community members. The student group is called Salud Southwest Exchange. Their goal is to learn about the need for rural health providers and share ideas about the Cuban universal health care system. KUNM’s Jim Williams talked with two of the students. This is part of that conversation.
Joanna Souers and Keasha Guerrier are two of 104 U.S. students studying on full scholarships at the Latin American International School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba. They and ten other students are on a two-week visit to the U.S. Southwest. Some of the students will speak Tuesday evening at 6 PM at the Albuquerque Friends Meeting House at 1600 5th Street, an event hosted by the SouthWest Organizing Project. Information on the Cuban project at www.saludswexchange.org. |
