New Mexico Senator Tom Udall is calling President Obama’s first U.S. Supreme Court selection “historic”.
The Democrat says, if confirmed, Judge Sonia Sotomayor could become the first Hispanic and only the third woman to serve on the country’s highest court. In an e-mailed statement, Udall said, in her career, she has “earned praise for her thoughtful opinions.”
He added he hopes the Senate, which should begin confirmation hearings for Sotomayor in coming weeks, will be “fair and respectful” in its debate.
Democratic Senator Jeff Bingaman, meanwhile, acknowledged it’s possible that debate could become contentious.
Still, he said, Sotomayor’s qualifications should override any major concerns.

BINGAMAN: "I’m sure that there’ll be, uh, points of opposition that some people latch onto just because there’s determined to be in opposition. But I think any reading of her background that I’ve seen would indicate that she is very fair minded and has a reputation for excellence as a federal judge." Governor Bill Richardson, in a statement, said Sotomayor’s life experience combined with her legal intellect makes her an excellent choice.
The governor said Obama should be “commended for combining diversity and impeccable legal credentials in his selection.” |
