NM Senate Passes Domestic Violence Legislation
* Airdate: Thu., 4 Feb. 2010
The New Mexico Senate has passed a measure that would set up a commission to improve the state’s response to domestic violence and services for its victims.

The bill would charge the governor with appointing to the commission 26 members from various state agencies and advocacy organizations.

The Domestic Violence Leadership Commission would meet at least six times a year and then report to interim legislative committees and the Governor.

Dona Ana Democratic Senator Mary Jane Garcia voted in favor of the bill.

Listen

GARCIA: "Just consider the collaboration of all these people that are going to be working together to make it better for victims of domestic violence."

There was some concern expressed by some Senators that the commission didn’t expressly contain members of the faith community.

An amendment to add such a member failed.

The bill was amended by Albuquerque Republican Senator Mark Boitano to compel the commission to “study possible inequities in the treatment and disposition of males involved in domestic violence.”

Bill supporters, including Albuquerque Democrat Jerry Ortiz y Pino, noted statistics indicate the preponderance of domestic violence is committed by men against women.

The measure passed the Senate 28 to 8 and now heads to the House.
