The public will have a chance this week to meet with the man responsible for evaluating whether the Albuquerque Police Department is following the requirements of an agreement to reform the department.
The federal monitor, James Ginger, could receive criticism at Thursday’s forum. He missed an initial deadline to file the first progress report on how APD’s reform process is going. This, after an investigation by the Department of Justice found that APD engaged in a pattern of excessive force.
That progress report will be drawn up and made available to the public sometime this month, according to the city attorney.
Under the agreement, the Albuquerque Police Department is required to revamp—and in some cases develop brand new—policies and practices, ranging from crisis intervention training to body-worn cameras.
The settlement agreement also requires regular public updates about the reform process that is expected to take at least three more years.
The community forum will be held Thursday evening at the Sheraton Uptown in Albuquerque beginning at 6 p.m.
