Cairo Soundscape—Tahrir Square Anniversary

Photograph by Pedro Ugarte

Fri. 1/20 10p: In honor of the one-year anniversary of the pro-democracy movement in Egypt that swept away a three-decade old regime, we reprise the first program in our ongoing “Hip Deep in Egypt” series.

Cairo Soundscape delves into Egypt’s religious and historical DNA with koranic recitation, Coptic hymns, ancient African ritual music, and the popular songs of the country’s most iconic modern singer, Mohmed Mounir.

We hear the sounds of the Nile river, Cairo’s cacophonous streets and tranquil cultural refuges, and the voices of artists and observers with a profound sense of the rich past that has brought Egypt to the unprecedented revolution that is still unfolding before our eyes.
