A Conversation Between Two Major Women Native American Artists

Two Santa Fe museums are honoring two major Native American women artists with exhibits this year. The two women met in conversation on Mar 11 at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. They talked about their development as women artists, the place of women in the Native American art world, and the role of mentoring.

A retrospective of 20 years of Margarete Bagshaw's paintings, bronze and clay as wall art, and multi-colored ceramic vessels are featured at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture through December 2012. Bagshaw is a third generation artist. Her mother is the painter Helen Hardin and grandmother is pueblo artist Pablita Velarde.

Juane Quick-to-See Smith is exhibited at the Georgia O'Keefe museum as part of their focus on American modernists. Smith, a native of Montana, has been active not only as a major artist, but also in promoting women artists and contemporary native art. She lives in Corrales.
