Albuquerque, NM – Democrats in the US Senate have a new idea for improving the nation's economy--hire an American.

A vote on the legislation, called the Creating American Jobs and Ending Offshoring Act, could happen as early as Tuesday, September 28.

The proposal includes incentives, like a payroll tax break, for US companies to hire Americans to do jobs that have moved overseas in recent years.

New Mexico's Senior Senator, Jeff Bingaman, supports the legislation.

The bill would also penalize companies that shut down operations in the US and send jobs abroad.

The US Chamber of Commerce and other national organizations have come out against the legislation.

Bingaman says he's not sure if Democrats have the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster of the measure.
