Comanche family, early 1900s
Wed. 1/12: Tribes and black slaves provide a backdrop of American history that most Americans know very little about. Did you know that some Indian tribes actually owned black slaves and other tribal people helped them to freedom? Where did tribes stand during America's Civil War?
This history has relevance today with the issues brought up by the Freedmen. The Smithsonian's NationalMuseum of the American Indian has a traveling panel show called "Indivisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas." Guests include University of Arizona State professor Don Fixico (Shawnee/Sac&Fox).
