U.S. Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham won a decisive victory last night, but she’s got a hard road ahead of her as a Democrat in the Republican-controlled Congress.
She's facing a tough environment when she returns to work, but she said that means her job is even more important. After the divisiveness and xenophobia of president-elect Donald Trump’s candidacy, Grisham said it will be up to Congress to heal the country.
"It’s going to be Congress’ job," she said. "We’re going to have to come together to make sure those are not values in this country and not play into those fears. There’s a lot of unknowns."
The more Democrat and moderate Republican women who are elected, the more effective Congress is, Grisham said. Women have brokered every major deal since she took office in 2012, she said, but what’s missing after last night’s election is a historic, iconic moment for female politicians.
Lujan Grisham says her focus will continue to be on the economy and job growth in New Mexico, as well as making college affordable.
