Santa Clara Pueblo - Las Conchas Fire Gone, Damage Continues

Fri. 7/20 11a : Just over a week ago the Pueblo of Santa Clara in New Mexico declared a state of emergency due to recent flooding and damage as a result of last year’s Las Conchas Fire. They are not the only tribe that is feeling the burn of major fires from months and years gone by. Over the years, devastating fires have not only wiped out wildlife, vegetation and landscapes but, they have also changed and challenged the environments and cultures of many tribes. How have Native nations faced flames even after they have been extinguished?

Thu. 7/12 8a: Natural gas, touted for its environmental, economic, and national security benefits, is often thought of as the fuel that will “bridge” our transition from oil and coal to renewables. The ability to extract natural gas from shale formations through a method called hydraulic fracturing has unleashed vast, untapped sources—by some estimates, the U.S. now sits on a 100-year supply. But possible contamination from toxic chemicals used in the fracking process has been the source of increasing health and environmental concerns.

What do U.S. Supreme Court rulings mean for New Mexico?

KUNM Call In Show 6/28 8a: The U.S. Supreme Court struck down most of the provisions in Arizona's controversial SB1070 immigration law, leaving one of the most disputed provisions in place- the "papers please" part of the law.  What does this ruling mean for New Mexico?  Would you like to see a similar law passed in New Mexico? 

We also are expecting a Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act healthcare law.  We'll discuss the ruling and its impact on New Mexico.

The NM Dept. of Health reports 1,074 lbs of oxycodone were sold here in 2010. That's up 233% over the last decade.
