The Public Regulation Commission is continuing to seek input on PNM’s energy replacement plan. More than 200 people showed up to a meeting in Albuquerque Wednesday night.
Commissioner Valerie Espinoza took a moment during public testimony to say she had received almost 100 written comments opposing PNM’s plan from her constituents in Taos and Las Vegas.
“I know that many of you were unable to speak in Santa Fe during our public hearings so I just want to thank you for delivering these to me,” Espinoza said. “I want to acknowledge receipt and I’ll have them filed for the record tomorrow.”
The utility has proposed shutting down two of the coal-burning units at the San Juan Generating station by the end of 2017 and replacing that energy with more coal, nuclear, natural gas and a small amount of solar energy. PNM says this is the most cost effective option. Opponents say renewables would be cheaper.
The PRC will hold another public meeting in Silver City next week. A decision is expected sometime in May.
