APD Monitor Cancels Meeting With Oversight Board

The independent monitor, James Ginger, tasked with overseeing reform of the Albuquerque Police Department had two public meetings scheduled Thursday. Ginger’s first one with the Police Oversight Board was canceled at the last minute.

At about one this afternoon, when the meeting was scheduled to commence, David Ring, a member of the oversight board, delivered his apologies to the mostly vacant room.

“We’re not going be here very long because we just found out that the meeting has been canceled,” Ring said. “Apologies to all, but it happens.”

Ring said it's the second time the board has attempted to meet with Ginger only to be stood up at the last minute.

A spokesman for the city said there are no plans to reschedule this afternoon's meeting.

If all goes as planned for the second meeting tonight, community members can hear updates from Ginger on how Albuquerque’s police reform process is going, and voice their concerns directly to him.

The reform process comes after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice found that APD engaged in a pattern of excessive force.
