New Mexico voters overwhelmingly support public financing as a way to counter big money in elections, according to a new report by the Center for the Study of Voting, Elections and Democracy.

Lonna Atkeson, an author of the study and a political science professor at the University of New Mexico said people feel the campaign system is broken, and that voters are secondary to big donors. The feeling is nonpartisan, Atkeson said.

“People are really feeling that government is not responsive to the things that really matter that they’re not responding to the needs people,” she said.

More than half of voters surveyed said they think that all local elected offices should be eligible to receive public financing, and that it allows candidates to spend more time talking to voters and less time talking to donors.
