Voters In Two ABQ Districts To Choose City Councilors In Runoff

Hannah Colton / KUNM
The Herman Sanchez Community Center is a polling location for the Dec. 10 runoff election.

Tuesday, Dec. 10 is runoff Election Day for two Albuquerque City Council seats.

In the city center District 2, Zackary Quintero is challenging longtime City Councilor Isaac Benton, who has a long list of endorsements from New Mexico Democrats, including the mayor and state lawmakers. Quintero was endorsed by the firefighters’ and police unions and a couple of state legislators.

In the Northeast Heights’ District 4, voters will choose between Brook Bassan and Ane Romero. Bassan was endorsed by outgoing Councilor Brad Winter and a local police union, while Romero has endorsements from several prominent New Mexico Democrats, including the mayor.

The City Councilholds public hearings, makes local policies and approves the city budget.

The two races went to a runoff because no candidate got more than half the votes in last month’s election.

Polls are open on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m at 10 locations around town.

The County Clerk’s Office says just over 10 percent of registered voters between the two districts cast their ballots during the last few weeks of early voting.
