Early voting has begun in Albuquerque, and for the first time, voters can register and vote all within the same day. This could help historically underrepresented groups access the polls more easily.

Some voters may not know they are eligible to vote, like New Mexico’s homeless population.

Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover said a home address isn’t necessary for someone to register to vote. People just need a mailing address, and that can be a post office box or a shelter.

"If they receive their mail there, that is their address," said Stover.

If a voter is registering for the first time, they have to bring some form of ID, like a driver’s license or student ID. All it takes is a minute or two to fill out the form, Stover said. Plus, early voting offers some scheduling flexibility for voters.

"Early voting is just such a gift to voters," said Stover, "because when we used to all have to vote in the very same day, it was very hard for people to get off work or find time."

Early voting runs through Saturday, November 2.
