Bernalillo County is planning to build a village of tiny homes for people experiencing homelessness. But it’s facing some opposition.
The project has had challengers from the beginning and now the county has released a list of six possible locations for it.
“There’s folks who see ‘Oh my goodness, this is a way to stabilize people,’” said Bernalillo County Commissioner Debbie O’Malley. “Of course, I think there’s a lot of people who associate homelessness with crime.”
She said the project’s team considered more than 30 spots for the village to nestle into.
Most of the final six sites are in or near the International District on the Southeast side of Albuquerque. And they’re also near the city’s main streets, where public buses run through.
There’s a public meeting scheduled for tonight so people can learn more about the project. There are two more scheduled for next week.
