A Bittersweet Farewell To Goats Olaf And Sven

Rita Daniels
10-year old Abigail Suskey is excited that the two goats she raised this year are bulky enough to not be stuck in the cabrillito category at the Sandoval County Fair.

CUBA, N.M.—Kids from Sandoval County have been raising animals in anticipation of the annual fair this weekend.

Abigail Suskey is 10-years-old and spent the last year raising two goats that she named Olaf and Sven. They weighed in this morning at well over 50 pounds each, which puts them into the meat goat category.

Abigail said it’s going to be hard to sell them at auction this weekend, but she’s tried not to get too attached.

“It was a lot of fun this year," she said. "I had my parents helping me learn what to do with them, so I’m trying to sell them and make a little bit of money.”

If all goes well at the auction, Abigail said, she’s hoping to get at least $100 a piece for the animals.

The Sandoval County Fair Board of Directors expects thousands of visitors to head to Cuba over the weekend and said historically, the event—now in it’s third decade—brings in close to $200,000.
