LISTEN: Prevention Strategies By And For Local Communities

Friday 6/15 8a: The Prevention Research Center at the University of New Mexico does not show up in rural communities to proscribe solutions. Rather it works hand in hand with the people of those communities to create projects that address needs local needs and priorities. This often means adapting established reseaerch to the unique needs of rural New Mexico.

On this show we talk with Dr. Sally Davis, director of the Prevention Research Center, who is the 2018 receipient of the Community-Engaged Research Lectureship Award at UNM. She talks about several projects the center is working on, including Village Interventions and Venues For Actions or VIVA, which helps foster more physical activity. Davis also discusses the importance of listening to people who live in the communities before designing a project. The PRC is part of a nationwide network of academic centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control.

Also Marty Adamsmith talks with John Bova about why math majors need philosophy and vice versa.
