University Showcase 11/16 8a: More than 14,000 New Mexicans served in World War I, less than a decade after the state finally gained statehood. Thousands of others contributed to the effort on the homefront. Many citizens were eager to prove their patriotism after years of skepticism about making New Mexico part of the U.S.
Author David Holtby explores the war through the stories of New Mexico's people and institutions in "Lest We Forget: World War I and New Mexico."Holtby used numerous resources at the University of New Mexico, which had its own role in the war, to write the book, including "War Service of the University of New Mexico."
And Marty Adamsmith talks with Jens Van Gysel, a Ph.D student in linguistics about his research on the the Sanapaná language in Paraguay.
