Albuquerque Public Schools is asking voters to increase taxes to pay for capital projects, and due to recent changes in election law, that ask is coming in the mail. Tuesday Jan. 8, 2019, is the last day to register to vote in the special mail-in election.
The bond/mill levy package on the ballot would increase property taxes by about 5 percent in the Albuquerque school district. APS says if passed, the measure would provide about a billion dollars over the next six years, for things like building renovations, security upgrades, and educational equipment.
All 143 traditional schools and 53 charter schools would recieve some funding for facilities and equipment, says the district.
Bureau of Elections Administrator Nathan Jaramillo says this will be Bernalillo County’s first election conducted by mail.
"This is gonna be kind of a proof of concept, since we will be mailing out ballots to all registered voters within Bernalillo County," said Jaramillo. "We’ll have a good idea on voter turnout after the election."
Sandoval County voters who live within an APS district will also recieve ballots.
Jaramillo says people can still register to vote or update their mailing address, either online or in person, through end of business Tuesday.
Ballots will be sent out starting this week, and voters have until February 5 to return them.
The League of Women Voters is hosting an informational forum about the special election on Tuesday evening.
