Raíces

Raíces is a KUNM Volunteer Collective dedicated to bring listeners the rich and diverse Latin American, Chicano and Hispano musical roots and alternative culture, rhythms, instruments and singers or musical groups. From our particular life experience we all have an individual passion and love to share such songs and musical pieces you won’t hear anywhere else.

Raíces Shows air Mondays 7:30 to 10 pm, Saturdays 2 to 5 pm. “Salsa Sabrosa” is also brought to you by Raíces Collective Fridays 7 to 10 pm; and “Corazón Tanguero” every other Saturday 4:15 to 4:45 pm.

“Espejos de Aztlán”, is a weekly half hour interview segment, every Monday 7 – 7:30 pm dedicated to bring you local news and cultural/political discussions affecting our Latino/Chicano/Hispano New Mexican communities from a social justice perspective.

Mon. 2/5, 7:30p: Interview and live performance by flamenco guitarist Juani de la Isla.  From the Island of San Fernando (Cádiz, Spain) a place known as the cradle of late Flamenco vocalist Camarón de la Isla, Juani de la Isla has accompanied renowned flamenco singers such as José Mercé, Chato de la Isla, Juan Villar among others.

Musical Ventures

Mon. 1/29, 7:30p: Carnival is one of the most ancient popular feasts that survives across the world, it is a time to celebrate freedom and let the hidden side of our humanity come to light. Today, on Raíces show hosted by Cristina Baccin, Frank Leto will bring a taste of “Carnaval Fever”, a performance Musical Ventures produces yearly at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (February 9-10, 7:30pm). Enjoy the kick off of Carnival in New Mexico.

Eli del Puertos y los encantos

Sat. 1/20, 3p: Eli del Puerto and Sabino Iturbe -local music maestros- play their own compositions and Latin American melodies LIVE on Raíces show hosted by Cristina Baccin. Eli del Puerto y los Encantos will perform at Hotel Andaluz, Saturday January 20th, 7pm (2nd St. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102).

Sat. 1/13 2p: Cartoonist, satirist, writer and radio host Lalo Alcaraz returns to the KUNM airwaves on Raíces to commune with the New Mexico listening audience. Great conversation and plenty of great music await. Hosted by Louis Head.

Sat. 7/15, 3pm: Host Cristina Baccin interviews the musicians of TradiSon sharing their joy and knowledge of Cuban traditional musical genres: son, guajira, guaracha, bolero y más!

Sat. 7/1, 2pm: Latin Grammy Nominee Mariachi Flor de Toloache, an all­-female Mariachi ensemble creates a unique yet familiar sound in a largely male dominant musical genre. Since 2008, they have created an intoxicating mariachi style that expands the borders of the genre. On Raíces enjoy an interview hosted by Cristina Baccin with Mireya Ramos, Shae Fiol, Eunice Aparicio and Julie Acosta.

Sat. 5/20, 2p: Local band Hot Glue plays live on Raíces hosted by Cristina Baccin. They share their songs based on feminist stories highlighting historical heroines.

Sat. 3/4, 3p: Interview with Buenos Aires based musician Dat Garcia, one of a new generation of women in the electro-folk music scene. She shares her story of survival from trauma that inspires her thriving compositions of her new album “Maleducada” with host Cristina Baccin.

They talk with host Cristina Baccin about their new album "Louisiana nights" just released by their band "Félix y Los Gatos" . They play live "Nuevo México", "Yo quiero más" and other songs and tell us their stories about how this musical adventure began with a close brotherhood and to keep sober.

Mon. 11/7, 7:30p: A Latina second-grade teacher from Santa Fe (New Mexico) Melissa Tapia-Kovac received $25,000 from the Milken Educator Awards.  From Amy Biehl Community School at Rancho Viejo, Ms. Kovac is one of the 35 recipients of this nationwide recognition for teaching.
