Raíces

Raíces is a KUNM Volunteer Collective dedicated to bring listeners the rich and diverse Latin American, Chicano and Hispano musical roots and alternative culture, rhythms, instruments and singers or musical groups. From our particular life experience we all have an individual passion and love to share such songs and musical pieces you won’t hear anywhere else.

Raíces Shows air Mondays 7:30 to 10 pm, Saturdays 2 to 5 pm. “Salsa Sabrosa” is also brought to you by Raíces Collective Fridays 7 to 10 pm; and “Corazón Tanguero” every other Saturday 4:15 to 4:45 pm.

“Espejos de Aztlán”, is a weekly half hour interview segment, every Monday 7 – 7:30 pm dedicated to bring you local news and cultural/political discussions affecting our Latino/Chicano/Hispano New Mexican communities from a social justice perspective.

Sat. 4/25, 2:30p: Join Raíces Saturday afternoon on KUNM for a live in-studio performance by the New York-based ensemble Raquel Z. Rivera & Ojos de Sofia, in anticipation of their upcoming weekend performances in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Raquel relocated from New York to Albuquerque several years ago, and performances by Ojos are a rare treat.

Raices spent the day at the National Hispanic Cultural Center for the 22nd annual Cesar Chavez March and Fiesta.  There was poetry, music from Nosotros and Keith Sanchez and the Moon Theives, and a keynote address from the last of the "four horsemen of the Chicano movement" Jose Angel Gutierrez.  Our hosts Adam Aguirre and Guille Quiroz brought it to you live, along with some interviews with community organizers and leaders.

Sat. 3/28 2p:  Celebrate the legacy, life and work of the great American civil rights leader, César Chávez. KUNM and the Raices Collective will broadcast the 22nd Annual Cesar Chavez Day Fiesta live from the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. There will be music, poetry and a keynote address from Chicano leader Jose Angel Gutierrez.  Our on-air broadcast starts at 2p but we’ll be streaming live from the fiesta starting at 12:00p.  Click here to listen.

Sat. Oct 4th, 2p: OCTOBER 4th is WORLD ANIMAL DAY established in 1931 by a group of ecologists in Florence, Italy to celebrate endangered species and all kinds of animal life (in coincidence with  the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron of animals).

Celebrate our best friends with Latin American songs that honor animal life: el tecolote, el caballo, la vicuña, el perro, el gato, el tucá guazú, el yurumí, and more! ¡FELIZ DÍA DE LOS ANIMALES!

Mon. Sept. 29th, 7:30p: Jesús Muñoz of Casa Flamenca drops by to discuss his next performance, "Techarí". In the Gypsy Caló, techarí means ¨to be free¨-not under the control or power of another. He´ll share with us his inspiration for this new work . When & Where: National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque Journal Theater, Friday-Saturday, October 3-4, 8pm

At 8:00 pm, Andrés Moreno and Colin Butts, cast members of the UNM production of the Federico García Lorca play, "As Five Years Pass" will open some surprises of this "pearl" of the theatre.

Sat. Sept. 27, 3p: From Colombia to the Globalquerque, the day after their big concert, Beto Jamaica and his band shared with RAÍCES stories about vallenato and its origins. Mr. Jamaica is one of the most important vallenato and cumbia musicians of his country, and winner as Rey of the "Leyenda Vallenata Festival" in 2006.

Sat. August 2nd at 3p: A descendent from the South American country Guyana and 2014 New Mexico Music Award for Best Jazz CD, Faith Amour shares her deep velvety voice with us. She takes us on a musical trip from her life in New Mexico, the Caribbean and African heritage of her ancestors, landing at a contemporary jazz with French flair.

In their first day in the USA, they ´ll share their music with RAÍCES LIVE! en vivo! We will chat about their 500-year old cabildo/lumbalu culture and traditions. Their drummers will shake KUNM!

Sat. 14 June, 3pm : Music and interview with "La Marisoul" o Marisol Hernández, lead singer of La Santa Cecilia, and José "Pepe" Carlos (accordion and requinto). Both have lots of stories to share: La Marisoul, a daughter of immigrants, lead a new generation of Latinos through social commentary with the Los Angeles based band. Pepe is a "Dreamer" and a member of this Grammy winning band (Best Latin Rock Album 2014) for their album Treinta Días.

Mon. 18 May, 7:30p: Tune in to Raíces when we will feature the music of New York drummer, composer, arranger and bandleader Bobby Sanabria. We’ll talk about his life and times, and the music of the Puerto Rican and broader Latino community of New York, and of his beloved homeland the Boogie Down Bronx.

We’ll also get a taste of the just released “¡Qué Viva Harlem!”, a recording of the Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Sanabria.

Composer, guitarrista and folk collector, CIPRIANO VIGIL  will come by to share his songs, stories, and his new book, "New Mexican Folk Music/Cancionero del Folklor Nuevomexicano" (UNM Press, 2014).

Afterwards, we´ll move from North to South America with chacarera, music from the Argentinian folk heart: traditional, electronic, fusion with other genres, and even for children! Chacarera para todos los gustos! Y mucho más!
