Piñatas

Mon. 7/3, 7p: Celebration, fiesta, protest and more are wrapped up in the traditional art form of colorful papers and imaginative design that is the piñata. On Espejos de Aztlán, Cristina Baccin interviews Visual Arts Program Director, Dr. Tey Marianna Nunn National Hispanic Cultural Centerand Curator of The Piñata Exhibit that runs through January 31. Dr. Nunn gives us an interpretation of the importance of this art in the history of this region and what inspired her to organize this exhibit that illustrates it's art, its techniques, contemporary Southwest piñatas, and how the tradition is rooted in family celebrations as much as in political protests. Local piñatero, Francisco Rodríguez of the “Casa de Piñatas” (2219, Lead SE, Albuquerque) tells us how this art passes on from generation to generation in the Mexican community.
