Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (Serie Tradiciones)
CD Cover: Guillermo Velázquez y Los Leones de la Sierra de Xichú";

Mon. 4/30, 7p: Ethnographer, musician and scholar, Dr. Alex E. Chaveznot only observes and examines cultural production but immerses himself intimately into the music he studies by playing it.

In this interview, Prof. Chavez shares with us the huapango arribeño– a musical style born in the mountainous regions of north central Mexico – a music rich in composition and orquestration that also has profound community and political significance, as well as a family and personal history.

In his recent publication, Sounds of Crossing (Duke University Press, 2017), Prof. Chavez shares with host Cristina Baccin his exploration of huapango arribeño´s border crossing from community gatherings in Mexico as it traveled to patios in the U.S.A. His work transcends academic scholarship with the production of an album, Guillermo Velazquez y Los Leones de la Sierra de Xichu, one of the leading groups of this genre for the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings (Serie Tradiciones).

Dr.  Alex E. Chávez is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and a faculty fellow of the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame
