Flu season is here and state officials are urging people to get vaccinated.

Around 36,000 people across the country die each year from the flu, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

David Morgan said getting vaccinated isn’t just to protect yourself, it’s to protect friends and family and not spread the virus. He’s with the state Department of Health.

“The bottom line is, when it comes to public health, a flu shot is up there with washing your hands," Morgan explained.

Morgan said people often have to go to work sick and the flu shot is a good bet for prevention. Elderly people and folks with weaker immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Last flu season 31 New Mexicans died.
