Let's Talk Equity With APS Board Candidates

Hannah Colton / KUNM
Constituents listen to public comment during an APS board meeting in November 2018.

Let’s Talk NM 10/24 8a: Members of the Albuquerque Public Schools board control a massive budget and policies affecting more than 80,000 students. Plus, they’ll hire the next superintendent. On Let’s Talk New Mexico, we’ll have the APS board candidates in studio, and we want your questions for them. What inequities do you see in Albuquerque schools? What should district leadership do about disparities related to race, language access, class and ability?

A judge last year ruled thatNew Mexico has failed to provide sufficient education to Native American students, English language learners, students with disabilities, and those from low-income backgrounds, and we want to know how APS board candidates plan to address those persistent inequities. Priority will be given to audience questions related to the wellbeing of those student populations.

Send in your stories, comments and candidate questions by Wednesday, Oct. 23 to letstalk@kunm.org. You can also call in live during the show Thursday morning.

Candidates who participated:

Peggy Muller-Aragón, the incumbent from District 2, did not respond to KUNM's multiple requests to participate.

Hannah served as news director at KUNM and reported on education, Albuquerque politics, and anything public health-related. She died in November 2020.
