Eight northern New Mexico schools are getting extra state funding to better serve Native American students. The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) has awarded $800,000 dollars for indigenous education initiatives that districts will develop with tribes and community partners over a three-year period.

Tribal colleges are the only public higher education institutions in New Mexico where students cannot use the state lottery scholarship. A measure approved by the Senate Education Committee on Friday morning would change that.

Institute Of American Indian Arts To Launch MFA Program

The Institute of American Indian Arts will launch its first graduate program this summer. The Masters of Fine Arts degree in creative writing will be the first program of it’s kind at any tribal college in the nation.

The two-year program will focus heavily on writing in a number of genres, and the Institute of American Indian Arts, or IAIA, says there are nearly 30 candidates admitted for the program, which officially opens at the end of July.
