"Don Usner" by Cheye Pagel

Mon. 3 March, 7pm: We converse with Don USNER, photographer and writer, in his Santa Fe studio. Throughout his life, Usner´s  main focus has been the depiction of beauty, and -at the same time- the social contrasts of the Rio Grande Valley.

His reflections about northern New Mexico history and culture can be deeply appreciated through his camera lens: from the enchantment of a typical colourful New Mexican landscape to the black and white drama of the gente del pueblo.

He  spent his youth in Los Alamos and Chimayó, a town where his ancestors lived for almost three hundred years. His second book, Sabino’s Map: Life in Chimayo’s Old Plaza,  illustrated with his photographs, depicts Chimayó from its central social focal point: the old plaza ( Museum of New Mexico Press,  1995).

In December 2013, he was recognized with the New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF) Luminaria Award for his many contributions to New Mexico.
