Regulators have been creating various models in order to try to predict when a plume of contamination from a decades old jet fuel leak at KirtlandAirforce Base will reach Albuquerque drinking water wells.

Reporter John Fleck covers science and policy for The Albuquerque Journal. He says one of the models shows carcinogenic chemicals reaching an Albuquerque water utility well as early as 5 years from now, another says we’ve got 30 years until the contamination gets there. That's because it’s really hard to determine what is happening 500 feet below the surface of the earth.
