Garnett Stokes is the University of New Mexico’s new president. She took some time out of her first day in office Thursday to shake hands and meet people on campus.
In a short speech at the student union building, president Stokes said she’s excited to be the 22nd president of UNM. She reassured the audience that she plans on communicating with the university as a whole.
“I promise that I will listen, and that I will listen carefully, that I will be patient and have an open mind and I’m making a commitment to making highly informed decisions,” Stokes said.
Stokes is the first female president at UNM. The Board of Regents appointed her for the position last November. She has a 5-year contract that includes a salary of $400,00 a year. She’s taking over for Interim President Chaouki Abdallah, who will serve as provost
