UNM Students Vote In ABQ Election

Folks gathered at polling locations across Albuquerque today to decide on the next mayor and city councilors, and a sick leave question. The line was long at the University of New Mexico.

Students chatted as the line trickled down the staircase in the Student Union Building.

Tori Cárdenas skipped the down the steps after casting her ballot. The 25-year-old said it’s crucial to exercise the right to vote, and local elections are particularly important.

"Honestly the people that are helping you, that are from where you’re from,” Cárdenas said, “Making that community better together is a big deal.”

Cárdenas also said she believes her generation has the power to enact real change if people work to educate themselves on the issues and come together. The polls close at 7 p.m.
