The City of Albuquerque took comment from more than three dozen people Thursday night about a plan for building a mile long six-foot wide trail in the Rio Grande bosque north of I-40.

The overwhelming majority of people who spoke opposed the newest proposals for a trail calling it a “super highway” that would disturb coyote dens, hawks nests and porcupine habitat.

But Mary Beresford said the trail would enable people with limited mobility to hear the babbling river.  She uses a wheelchair and was one of three people who spoke in support of the trail.

“Allow those of us with disabilities to boldly go where everyone else has been gone before,” Bedford said. “Think about that.”

The Bosque Action Team, a coalition of groups who are concerned about the bosque development, said they support access for people with disabilities. They want to see narrower trails made with different materials.

City officials said the width of the trail and the materials are not up for discussion. Construction is set to begin in early February and they want input on which route people prefer. The public comment period ends January 15th.
