Kirtland Air Force Base and the New Mexico Environment Department will meet with the public for an upadate on efforts to clean up the decades old fuel spill on Thursday in Albuquerque.

Dave McCoy, the Executive Director of the advocacy group Citizen Action NM said the environment department should be more transparent and that people should care.

"Their municipal water supply is at risk," he said, "Maybe not immediately, but certainly looking down the road," said McCoy.

McCoy said he wants an independent monitor to ensure the department follows through on their commitment to keep water safe. The city's drinking water has not been contimamintated, according to NMED.

The meeting will include a discussion about the final version of the 2018 Strategic Plan for Kirtland Air Force Base Aviation Fuel Clean Up.  A Q-and-A session will conclude the meeting.
