Festival Sefardi 2026: Fragments of Ritual and Memory Art Opening and Gallery Talk
Curated by artist Janelle Worthington Cardenas, Fragments of Ritual and Memory explores themes of conflicting identities: those who were oppressed, forced, and hidden, where survival meant learning to adapt and assimilate into their new realities. Through visual art and the written word, artists draw upon their lived experiences, bringing forth the knowledge to grapple with how to heal and transform without perpetuating the oppressions of the past, and how to resist the ongoing impacts of Colonialism and Fascism in our communities. The art opening and gallery talk is part of Festival Sefardi 2026: A Tapestry of New Mexico Identity. An Artist's panel Q & A will also take place during the Festival, on Saturday, May 23rd, from 3-4 PM. The exhibit runs from May 22nd–June 30th, in the Gallery at Nahalat Shalom.
Festival Sefardí, New Mexico’s only annual celebration of the unique history and culture of the Sephardic Jews in the Southwest enters its 17th year with a focus on the complex identities that make up New Mexico’s rich cultural tapestry. The festival, runs from May 21-24, featuring music, liturgical services, poetry, art, performances, workshops, and lectures by scholars exploring intersections of Jewish, Indigenous, and Hispano realities.
