The state Canvassing Board has ordered recounts in razor-close primary election races for two state Senate seats. The board on Tuesday certified election results for the June 5 primary election, except for the races requiring recounts.
State law requires automatic recounts when the difference between the top two candidates is less than one-half of 1 percent.
In a race for the Republican nomination in Senate District 32 in southeastern New Mexico, Chaves County farmer Cliff Pirtle is nine votes ahead of Roswell Fire Chief Chad Hamill. The winner faces Senate President Tim Jennings, a Roswell Democrat, in the general election.
In the Democratic contest in Senate District 30 in western New Mexico, Clemente Sanchez of Grants has a nine-vote lead over Maxine Velasquez, who is his niece.

The state Canvassing Board is preparing to order recounts in two close races for state Senate seats. The board meets Tuesday to hear from the secretary of state's office on results of the June 5 primary election.
Under state law, automatic recounts are required for certain offices when the difference between the top two candidates is less than one-half of 1 percent.
A recount is expected in a race for the Republican nomination in Senate District 32 in southeastern New Mexico. The winner faces Senate President Tim Jennings, a Roswell Democrat, in the general election.
A recount also is planned in the Democratic contest in Senate District 30 in western New Mexico. Unofficial preliminary returns showed incumbent Sen. David Ulibarri of Grants finishing third in a four-way race.
