New Mexico is the only state that does not give its lawmakers a salary. But that could change if voters pass Constitutional Amendment 4 in this election. If it passes, lawmakers would receive a salary equal to the median household income for New Mexico, which is currently $68,000, starting in 2029.

The two candidates each plan to use their own approach to what they both say is the most overlooked role of the lieutenant governor’s job: being ombudsman.

He says his experience puts him ahead of his challenger, and his track record as an active litigator speaks to his effort for New Mexicans.

Sam Kane, a personal injury lawyer living in Las Cruces with more than two decades experience is running as a Republican against democratic incumbent Raúl Torrez for Attorney General. He says if elected he would focus on crime and public safety first, and keep his attention at a more local level as opposed to more salient national issues.
