A city bus crashed into a house on the SE corner of the Girard and Coal intersection in Albuquerque a little after 10 a.m. this morning.
Five passengers were transported to UNM Hospital with injuries, none of which were life-threatening, said Rick De Reyes, spokesperson for the Transit Department.
Bystanders, one of whom was a friend of the driver's, breathed a sigh of relief when the she was escorted off the bus and into an ambulance.
The bus was heading eastbound on Coal when it was broadsided at Girard by a plumbing van, De Reyes said. The van's driver was also transported to UNMH. Tanner Tixier with the Albuquerque Police Department said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
"It sounded like an explosion," said neighbor Iain Vetter. "This is the worst accident I've ever seen."
The woman who lives at the residence was home when the accident happened but is OK, De Reyes said, and is still at the scene.
