Lujan Grisham Vows To Repeal State Abortion Ban

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham made it clear in her State of the State address today that she wants abortion to remain an option for New Mexico women.

The state still has a statute from 1969 on the books prohibiting abortion. Governor Lujan Grisham said she wants to erase it.

“The old criminal abortion law of this state, only one of nine left in the entire country, must go,” she said. “Bring me that bill and I will sign it.”

If the U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, abortion laws would be left up to individual states.

That means under current state law, it would become a felony to perform abortions here except in cases of rape, birth defects and if the pregnancy poses a serious threat to the woman’s health.

Efforts to overturn the law seem to have strong support in the state House and Senate.
