Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area and Los Luceros Historic Site present the first-ever Rio Grande Sky Fiesta.
Come witness the breathtaking landscapes, skies, and natural beauty of Northern New Mexico on November 2 and 3, 2024, at Los Luceros Historic Site for the first ever Rio Grande Sky Fiesta put on by the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area (NRGNHA) and Los Luceros Historic Site. Nearly a dozen balloons, including a mini-Zozobra balloon, will launch in a celebration of the area’s vibrant charm, culture, and close-knit communities.

Balloons are just the start, you’ll be able to explore the picturesque Los Luceros Historic Site, a 148-acre property along the east bank of the Rio Grande, that includes a 19th-century Capilla (chapel); a Victorian-era cottage, a visitor center and a farmyard with Navajo Curro sheep and jennies (female donkeys). Food trucks will be at the site various times throughout the weekend.

Schedule of events:
Saturday, Nov. 2: Mass ascension—Gates open at 6:40 a.m., launch time 7:15 – 7:45 a.m.
Balloon glow—Gates open at 4:30 p.m., balloons inflated by 5:30 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 3: Mass ascension—Gates open at 5:40 a.m., launch time 6:15 – 6:45 a.m.
Book talk with travel journalist Judith Fein and cowboy poet Paul Ross at 1 p.m.
Sunday is also Los Luceros’ monthly Dawn 'til Dusk Day, with free admission for New Mexico residents with ID. Be sure to dress warm and bring a flashlight to handle the cool weather and dark, bumpy farm fields. The fields are not handicapped accessible.

Saturday, Nov. 2: $10 for adults, $5 for children 16 and younger. Includes admission to the morning mass ascension, entry to the site and historic buildings, and evening balloon glow. Admission is free to Museum of New Mexico Foundation members, Native/Tribal affiliations, and New Mexico disabled veterans with tickets at the admission desk. Art Through Struggle Gallery in We Are of This Place: The Pueblo Story – the next indoor mural project is by NSRGNTS, two Indigenous artists based in Albuquerque. NSRGNTS is Leah Povi Marie Lewis (Laguna, Taos, Zuni Pueblos/Hopi/Diné) and Votan Henriquez (Maya/Nahua). Leah and Votan are becoming well known for their unique anime-inspired style of mural painting in vivid colors. Their artwork for IPCC will focus on Pueblo empowerment of past, present, and future. The mural will place emphasis on Po’pay as a Pueblo role model and a figure of strength. The space will invite storytelling and teaching for all ages, through the mural’s approachable style that will be accessible even for our youngest audiences and community members. The reception is scheduled for the evening of Friday, June 28, from 5-7pm. The exhibition will be on view from June 28, 2024 through June 1, 2025.

The “Earth Geosciences and Geotechnical Engineering” conference aims to bring together researchers, academics, scholars, and experts in Geosciences and related fields, to discuss and exchange ideas on the latest developments in natural resource management. The conference will cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to geology, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, and Geophysics. The conference also aims to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of Geosciences and its practical applications in natural resource management, hazard mitigation, and environmental protection.

The IPCC is thrilled to announce the 44th Annual Native American Student Art Show showcasing artwork by Native American students K-12 in New Mexico. The exhibition will be held in our Artists Circle Gallery from November 23, 2024 through February 6, 2025. New this year, artwork submission information must be completed using the online entry form, and artworks must be delivered to the South Entrance between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from October 30, 2024 to November 4, 2024 . The IPCC will have computers available during delivery to complete online submission forms.

This year’s theme is “Water is Life,” offering students a chance to explore its meaning through their own lens. Consider these guiding questions:

What does “water is life” mean to you?
How do you get water?
What is water used for?
What does water provide?
Artwork Information & Requirements

Each student may submit only one artwork.
Two-dimensional pieces on paper will be placed within an 11×14 inch frame with an optional 8×10 inch mat (both provided by IPCC during artwork delivery); please plan students’ paper sizes to match either set of dimensions.
Canvas size should also not exceed 11×14 inches.
Three-dimensional works should not exceed 9 inches in height or width.
Frames and pedestals will be provided by IPCC.
Please note that we cannot accept artworks requiring electricity or digital technology.
The IPCC will have computer stations onsite during delivery dates if submissions are not completed in advance of artwork delivery.
The IPCC cannot accept artworks after November 4.
Winning artists each receive a prize, and all participants can make their works available for sale and receive 100% of the proceeds.

Harwood Art Center is pleased to present Lucha Libre Trans Queer Art Espectacular: uplifting the lives of transgender and queer athletes in new mexico by Artist in Residence, Gael Luna. This exhibition honors Trans and Queer athletes by portraying their strength and authenticity through visual/multimedia art, culminating in an immersive community celebration. Together, we will interrupt cycles of harmful rhetoric by bringing play, bravado, and Mexican cultural iconography into our Albuquerque communities. This project features portraits of Trans and Queer athletes, along with unique masks and capes that reflect their stories and resiliency in the style of luchadores (Mexican wrestlers).

Gael Luna has been working in the Residency Studio At Harwood Art Center since March 2024. We invite you to join us for an Exhibition Reception & Panel Discussion featuring artist Gael Luna and and collaborators whose stories are featured in the exhibition.at Harwood on Saturday, October 19 from 4:30pm - 6:30pm. This event is free and open to the public.

60 New Mexico artists working in different styles show their interpretations of what is beautiful.

Born in Maiquetía, Venezuela, in 1920, Luchita Hurtado committed almost eighty years of her art practice to the research of universality and transcendence.

The life-changing impact of the artist’s time in New Mexico and persisting devotion to the enchantment of Taos are explored in Luchita Hurtado: Earth & Sky Interjected.

Harwood Museum of Art is pleased to announce its exhibition Nicholas Herrera: El Rito Santero, a glimpse into the life and works of master santero Nicholas Herrera. Born and raised in the village of El Rito, New Mexico, Herrera’s art is rooted in the spiritual traditions and artistic practices of his Northern New Mexican mestizo (Spanish, Mexican, Native American) heritage.

As a modern santero, Herrera creates bultos, retablos, and large-scale mixed media works, many of which detail rich and often challenging chapters in his storied life. Through varied mediums, this exhibition surveys Herrera’s personal identity, family history, relationship to place, and political ideology.

Harwood Museum of Art is proud to exhibit the first solo museum exhibition of Nicholas Herrera.

Through original documents, photographs, and artifacts, Witnessing Justice examines the challenges and importance of the Nuremberg trials and the international community’s response to Nazi crimes against humanity. This exhibit gives insight into the experience of prosecuting war crimes from the perspective of members of the legal team.

Now, you can also dive into the stories of Nuremberg through the interactive digital scrapbooks and photo albums of those who took part. NMHIM has engaged Corrales-based digital exhibit developer IDEUM to bring a dynamic new dimension to our exhibit.

The Cellicion Traditional Dance Group (Zuni) will be dancing.

Celebrate the seasonal cycles through prayer, song, and dance with our Cultural Dance Program. Dances connect us to our ancestors, community, and traditions while honoring gifts from our Creator.

They ensure that life continues and connections to the past and future are reinforced. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is the only place in North America to offer cultural Native American dances every week, year-round.
