PNM Customers Could See Renewable Energy Charges

Customers of New Mexico's largest utility could see the itemized costs of solar and wind energy if regulators approve the request from Public Service Company of New Mexico.

The Albuquerque Journal reportsPNM supports singling out the cost of renewable energy because state regulations require PNM to produce 20 percent of electricity with those methods by 2020.

Environmentalists counter the proposal is an effort to create a target for customer dissatisfaction.  They say if wind and solar costs are itemized on PNM bills, the cost of coal, nuclear, and natural gas produced electricity should also be itemized so that customers get a complete picture of their energy costs.

A hearing examiner recommended the new bill format include the cost of fuel purchases immediately following the cost of renewable energy sources.
