"Blunt Adjustments" To The State's Medical Marijuana Program Explained

After a survey last fall of card carrying medical marijuana patients in New Mexico found demand out-stripped supply, the state Department of Health has been under direct orders from a district judge to solve an annual 8,000 pound medical marijuana shortage.

Secretary of Health Retta Ward released a set of proposed rule changes earlier this month. Independent journalist Peter St. Cyr, who writes about the program for the Santa Fe Reporter, explained them to KUNM. He says the new rules will allow producers to grow more plants, but that the cost of a grower’s license has skyrocketed.
