A flash flood warning is in effect Monday across central and western New Mexico. Recent rains have already saturated the ground creating prime conditions for flooding.
The air around Albuquerque has been unusually thick with humidity since Friday night when an epic 100-year storm dumped more then 2 inches of rain in less than an hour.
Portions of downtown were completely flooded out because the downpour overwhelmed some of the city's pumping stations.
Jennifer Palucki with the National Weather Service says the flood warning is in effect again Monday because another system is creeping in from the west, causing multiple storms to literally lap over one another.
"The storms will be fairly slow moving and they may train over each other," explained Palucki. "So in other words you may get one storm and then another storm comes along over the same area and dumps some more rain and then a third storm may come over the same area."
Most susceptible to flooding are the state's urban centers, where the torrential rain can't be absorbed by the soil because it's all been covered in concrete. Some remote areas have recently been burned by wildfires and are also susceptible to flooding.
For those concerned about flooding, free sandbags are available at fire departments across the city.
The forecast calls for storms to dry up later in the week before another possible round of heavy rain this coming weekend.
