Protesters: Embrace Renewables PNM!

Rita Daniels

Hundreds of clean energy advocates marched in front of PNM headquarters on Tuesday during the utility’s annual shareholders meeting. The crowd called for New Mexico’s largest electricity provider to rethink its energy portfolio and continued investment in fossil fuels.

Leszek Teterycz wants PNM to replace all of the power that will be lost when two coal units are shuttered at the San Juan Generating Station with energy harnessed from the sun.

“This is the way to go,” Teterycz said. “We have this beautiful fusion reactor above us which is absolutely awesome and it’s going to be around about four or five billion years so, we should go solar!”

PNM’s CEO and President addressed shareholders. According to a transcript of her speech she said the company understands the inspired and emotional debate over renewables, but that the most reliable and cost-effective option for customers is to continue to rely on coal, natural gas and nuclear energy.

The state Public Regulation Commission could make a final ruling on PNM’s plan as early as next week.
