The Healthy Soil Act was signed into law earlier this year and it created a grant of $175,000 for farmers and ranchers to maintain soil health by doing things like: keeping the soil covered, maximizing biodiversity, and integrating animals into land management.
Katie Goetz said it was important to keep the program simple to encourage as many applications as possible. She’s a policy analyst with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.
"We are looking for creative proposals, from farmers, ranches, and other land managers who are really in touch with their land and know what their land might best need," Goetz said.
Applicants must have an eligible entity sign onto the proposal like soil and water conservation groups, NMSU’s extension services, acequias, land grants, or tribes.
There is still over a month to apply before the November 6th deadline.
