In a unique display of artistic collaboration, three Santa Fe theater companies are sharing production duties this fall on a prize-winning three-part drama. At the center is Iraq War veteran Elliot Ortiz, who shares with the trilogy's playwright, Quiara Alegría Hudes, family roots in Latin America and a hometown of West Philadelphia. Staged in repertory by Teatro Paraguas, Santa Fe Playhouse, and Ironweed Productions, The Elliot Trilogy performs September 26 - October 13.
The plays cover over 50 years and multiple generations in Elliot's family. Alix Hudson directs the first play in the trilogy, Elliot: a Soldier’s Fugue, and is the driving force behind the collaboration. She paraphrases playwright Hudes saying, "When you see all three parts of the play you get this feeling of family suddenly. You start to know the people, their patterns, how they're going to react. For Elliot's growth, you have all this depth -- addiction, recovery, family traumas -- that you just won't get in one part."
