(ENGLISH)

Mon. 8/10, 7p: With new and old challenges, a younger generation of musicians and composers recast and recreate the Nueva Canción Latinoamericana of the 20th Century. They revisit the profound sounds and rythms of the 1960s,  '70s and '80s recreating new musical arrangements as well as developing new compositions that reflect the claims, identity, and complexities of the Pan American experience that comes to light in contemporary art and social movements.

This Nueva Canción like the one of the last Century, is rooted in folk music and yet, it brings to light current urban realities; it recognizes the coexistence of genres that were previously considered strange to each other.  Its poetry reminds us that love songs express not only the love of a couple in romance but also the love for others. Facundo Cabral, Violeta Parra, Mercedes Sosa, and the Inti Illimani -to name but a few of the old Nuevo Cancioneros - conceived the movement in that way.

In New Mexico, a generation of musicians is flourishing and maturing to the beat of the Nueva Canción. The southwest is a cauldron that offers artists the richness of wandering to the "edges" of cultures.  And in that cauldron, exponents of this century's movement such as Lara Manzanares and Felix Peraltahighlight in truly Pan American music the magic of this century's flourishing of Nueva Canción.   Cristina Baccinconverses on ESPEJOS DE AZTLÁN with these artists as they prepare to launch their new collaborative work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_2HbCbjpp0">"Dos Corazones".

Lara Manzanares is a bilingual singer-songwriter of Northern New Mexican heritage. She was the winner best Album award with “Land Baby” and nominee as best Americana Song with “Dear John” in 2018 and 2019 New Mexico Music Awards. Rooted in the lands of New Mexico, and at the same time a keen observer of urban life, Ms. Manzanares sings from boleros, rancheras and corridos with her own deep and mischiveous compositions in English and Spanish.

Felix "Gato" Peralta is a nationally touring musician and songwriter with roots planted in the desert Southwest. His rhythms go from his signature “zydetejano" to blues, and tejano. Felix's soulful and sincere songwriting style lends itself to the rugged Southwestern landscape that he calls home.
