Half Broke: Horses And Humans Finding Wholeness And Trust

Aired Sat 5/30, 12pm: Carol Boss speaks with top-ranked horse trainer, Ginger Gaffney, whose life-affirming memoir, Half Broke, is a story of how both horses and humans seek relationships to survive. She answers a call to help retrain troubled horses at an alternative prison ranch in northern New Mexico, a facility run entirely by the prisoners.  Both the horses and residents arrive at the ranch broken in various ways: the horses defensive and terrified, some of the residents battling addictions are emotionally and physically shattered.  With deep insight into how animals and humans communicate through posture, body language, and honesty of spirit, Gaffney walks us through her struggle to train the untrainable and weaves in her own stories of a solitary childhood and her transformative connection with her first horse, Belle, learning to trust people as much as she trusts horses.

Ginger Gaffney received an MFA from IAIA (Institute of American Indian Arts) in Santa Fe.  She lives in northern New Mexico and is currently working on her first novel.
