School-based health centers are clinics housed in public schools that offer primary care, counseling, family planning and other services and the New Mexico Department of Health is closing several of them in the Albuquerque area.
The DOH said in a press release Wednesday that it would not be renewing the contracts for school-based health centers at two schools—Roosevelt Middle School in Tijeras, and School on Wheels, an alternative high school in Albuquerque.
The announcement said those health centers will be closed because not enough students are using the services. A representative from the department didn’t respond to requests for further comment.
Students at schools where centers are closing are being asked to find services at other clinics in Albuquerque.
