The Children's Hour, 10/12 Sat 9a: Does an animal have to be adorable to be appreciated? How do under appreciated animals like snakes, bugs, lizards and other critters that humans consider pests, fit into the web of life? Our friend Bethany Dunn, Science Education Coordinator from the Albuquerque Biopark will bring some misunderstood species to our studio to help us learn to love them.

The Children's Hour 9/21 Sat 9a: Travel to distant lands through song as we explore world music. Featuring performances recorded at Globalquerque 2019's school time show before an audience of a thousand kids by the Yup'ik band, Pamyua and the Garifuna Collective from Belize. The kids also interview the best selling author of more than 20 novels for young readers, Rick Riordan. It's all in an hour! Saturdays 9-10am on KUNM.

The Children's Hour 9/7 Sat 9a: This week we're broadcasting live from the East Mountain Public Library in Tijeras, New Mexico with Bernalillo County Commissioner Charlene Pyskoty at the mic for story time. Sing along with musician and performer Seth Hoffman, and kids can join the crew for the day just by showing up! Families are welcome to join us, the library will open early for our 9am show. Santa Fe Opera

The Children's Hour, 6/29 - Sat 9a: Summertime means going to the pool, picnics in the park, and for Santa Fe New Mexico, summertime is opera season.  We visited the world renown Santa Fe Opera to find out more about what opera is, and how kids can get involved. Summertime also is a great time to dig into new books, and we’ve got suggestions for kids of all ages. Broadcasting live every Saturday from 9 to 10am.

 

Circo Latino / NHCC

The Children's Hour, 6/22 Sat 9a: We're broadcasting live from the National Hispanic Cultural Center for Circo Family Day this Saturday June 22, and everyone is invited to join us! Learn about Circo Latino, enjoy a performance by the Niños in the National Institute of Flamenco, and try to keep up with master of puns, Chip Saltman. Featuring musical guest Frank Leto. Families of all ages are welcome to join us at the free festival at the NHCC, 1701 Fourth St. NW in Albuquerque.  Doors open at 8:30a, show starts at 9am. Kids Public Radio!

The Children's Hour, Sat 6/8 9a: How much screentime is too much for kids? This week on The Children's Hour we explore digital devices, addiction, and kids. Our crew discuss their own use of screens, and what they think about how they use their devices.  Dr. Kristina Sowar visits our studio to answer our questions about the mental health impacts of screentime on kids. We also hear from technology pioneer Dom Sagolla who has advice for kids about self control and screens.   It's all in an hour! Broadcasting on KUNM Saturdays from 9 to 10am.

City of Albuquerque

This week on The Children's Hour, we’re broadcasting live from Albuquerque’s Open Space Visitor Center with Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller.  The Kids Crew will follow up on our interview from when he first took office. With featured musical guest Robb Janov, and a special performance by the New Mexico Peace Choir.

Everyone is invited to join us at the Open Space Visitor Center on Saturday June 1, when doors will open at 8:30am. The whole family is welcome to be part of this live broadcast, then stay to enjoy the beautiful bosque. 

Wilderness Kids

This week on The Children’s Hour, what happens when the wilderness is the classroom? Teacher Jen Chavez Miller and her 8th graders from Albuquerque’s South Valley Academy explored the wilderness of New Mexico together on day trips, overnight, and for a week in the Gila Wilderness. Hear how kids react to their walk on the wild side. The students put together two videos to capture their experiences that you can see here and here.  Plus Julia talks with Kwame Alexander about his award winning books for kids.  It’s all in an hour!
